BROWN LAKE VR
A Short VR Proof of Concept by Samantha Lang
2018, 5 mins
BROWN LAKE VR is a short proof-of-concept work for a larger-scale, multi-chapter work ANTHROPOCENE VR, in development by Samantha Lang and Handmaid Media.
This is a story of place and an experience of bodies of water, rock, plants, air, creatures and other beings that have existed across deep time, and felt the impact of humanity’s existence on the planet. Working with live action, puppeteered landscapes filmed in miniature provide a sense of scale and presence. Our story-world is hand made from recycled materials, offering an imaginative abstraction of place and perspective, inviting the viewer to make the curious leap across the scales of time.
“Whilst this is not breaking news, very little reporting or media coverage of The Anthropocene seems to have provoked decisive action to slow the effects of man-made despoiling of the Mother Earth. Over the last decade more and more calls have been made for those working in the arts to address – in the form of new cultural narratives – a way of acknowledging and controverting the impact of capitalist modes of being. This project is a small step towards addressing the urgency of the issue.”
